Love of Magic: Book 1 Remastered

I know I told myself I'd leave Book 1 alone, but I was working on a sequence from Book 2, testing out a new technique. I was originally going to just render a static image, then bring it into After Effects to add effects, then take a single screenshot and use ingame. Except I managed to get it to loop cleanly into a 2 min video, and it looked pretty awesome running in the background instead of just a static image.

Having done that, I started thinking about doing it to the rest of Book 2. And I will; it's a reasonably cheap way to add impact to cool magic sequences, without spending days and days like I do on the big cutscenes. But I always wanted people to play the full game from beginning to end, and I started to worry that by the time I finally finish Book 3, Book 1 will look terribly, terribly dated.

So I had a bright idea; why not go back and add in this kind of animating effects to some of the key non-animated moments in Book 1? (Here an experienced project manager would go "oh no, you didn't....", but... well, yes I did). There's 30+ new animations of this kind, ranging from small throw-away scenes like this one:

... to entirely new videos replacing what was previously static images for umpf, like here. My favorite, which I also used as the Book 1 Remaster branding, was Treason's Reward. It's a shot from Act V's End sequence, where Emily states "I pledge to reward loyalty with trust. Service with Honour. Treason with Death". She feels a little more scary in this little animating clip than she did in the original still image.

Part of doing that involved replaying the game, and that's where my carefully laid plans went awry. I have (at least in my own mind) grown and evolved as a developer over the years, especially in terms of art and special effects. In the 2 years since I started Love of Magic I've certainly learned a LOT about what works visually in this medium. And some of the early stuff really hadn't aged well.

I ended up re-rendering a couple of dozen images, mostly for the early scenes, especially the erotic ones. Chloe's day 1 event in the bathroom, Strip MMA with Katie and Strip poker with Katie and Bella. While doing that I also added longer action animations for all three of them as a capstone. I also did a pass through to standardize aspect ratios, improve framing, color correct where it made sense, and add a proper background rather than just using whatever happened to be in the room.

All in all I ended up touching about 80% of the story-telling images in the game. and cleaned up a bunch of little annoying issues (Molly, for example, was originally blue-eyed, and some of her early images were still blue-eyed). I also did a typo-pass, fixed a card background that didn't unlock properly, and tested the various other achievements. Hopefully the update makes Book 1 feel visually more coherent, and raises the quality bar a little.

Firstly, you might want to check the osx 1.1.9 file, I know nothing about apple stuff, but I suspect that 22bytes is too small to be anything useful.

Next, any idea how long before the android version will be available?

Finally, my preference for the 2gb limit problem is to not have it stored online, I tend to read offline, (away from home sometimes if I can get the privacy,) so I would prefer to download it once and have done.

As I understand it, the google play store has a limit of 100Mb for the apk and allows 2 expansion files of 2Gb each, making a limit of 4Gb total. I dont know how that works or how it would apply to your VN, but I do know there are a couple of games that ask you to download a .obb file as well as the apk and stick that in a specific location in the android/obb folder in Internal Shared Storage. Maybe something similar might work for you?

Installation for these games usually involves creating the android/obb folder first, copying the .obb file over, then installing the apk. (I don't know whether the order is actually important or not.) Provided you give clear instructions about what name to give the android/obb folder its fairly straight forward.

Other than that, a greater level of image compression is the only way Im aware of, with the smaller screens, even on a larger tablet, most people wont be able to tell the difference anyway.

Thank you for making an excellent VN and taking the trouble to go back and update it.

Yeah, I found a bad bug there; I'm updating now.

The problem with OBB and other expansion files is that it requires a level of technical sophistication to install manually, and most people won't do it. Book 2 is set up to side-load now, which needs to be connected to the net before it will start, but afterwards should be safe to play.

Thank you for the reply. Have you looked at how Rebirth (by LikesBlondes) is trying to handle it perhaps? Broken into smaller chapters, import the save file at the start of each chapter? Its OK when it works, different people porting the VN can mess that up though since they all try to store things in different places. The two other approaches I've come across (my apologies for repeating what must be familiar to you already, I only hope to help in some small way,) 'My New Family' is broken into two parts, play and complete part1, then install part2 which overwrites part1, but leaves the saves intact to continue on, and secondly reducing the image quality,  the compressed version of a 2Gb PC release is often compressed down to something like 700Mb for people on limited bandwidth, this version is usually the one that gets ported to android,, the phone and tablet screens are so much smaller that most people are not really going to notice the lower resolutions.

Yeah, I drop the resolution a little (especially on the videos), but even then I worry about file-size. Book 2 is now > 2GB even after crunching the videos and images as far as I'm willing to take them, which is why I moved that onto the Cloud.
For Book 1 I think I'll be able to crunch it down < 2GB even with the videos, I just need to sort through things to get there :)

Looks like you got the size down quite a bit for book1, I will try the file from discord.

Thinking about book2, I have no idea how apk's work as an install process, but if you use an apk to upgrade an existing installation are all the files from the original version (other then the saves) automatically removed? Or could you use a second apk to add more files to the installation?

All of the existing files (minus saves) are removed; it's essentially replacing the fodler.
